ARLINGTON — Over the past couple of years, fighting cancer has become a city-wide passion in Arlington.

The community’s latest punch will be to play host to the Coaches vs. Cancer game, Jan. 28 against Lake Stevens.

“When this was first started, it was like, ‘yeah, that’s a good idea,’” said game organizer Caryn Brown. “Now everybody’s getting involved and we want to make this a yearly thing.”

The two schools have been recently afflicted by cancer, as both coaches had loved ones diagnosed with cancer of the past couple of years.

“I think with these two communities, this game has hit a little more close to home,” said Brown.

All proceeds of the game will go to the American Cancer Society.

Coaches, players, referees and cheerleaders will be decked out in pink to show their support.

There will also be honorary coaches who have survived cancer. Arlington’s coaches will be Kaitlyn Meyers, an Arlington High School freshman, Tammy Jacobs, an aunt of senior basketball player Blake Peterson and Walter Lee Roys, father of Arlington athletic director Tom Roys.

A donation bucket will be available at the game, as will In Honor and In Memory cards.

The American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life will both have information tables and Cascade Valley Hospital will have giveaways at the gym entrance.
