Arlington too giving, helps M-P easily win Wesco title

ARLINGTON – When you play a good team, you can’t afford to make mistakes.

If that’s the case, Arlington ended up in the poor house after its game against Marysville-Pilchuck Friday.

The Eagles fumbled the opening kickoff, and it went downhill from there, losing to the Wesco 3A North champions 42-14.

M-P won its first title since 1914, piling up 356 yards on the ground.

The Tomahawks will host Wesco South champion Snohomish at 8 p.m. Friday for the top seed to the state playoffs. M-P beat the Panthers 17-14 in the first game of the season.

The Eagles drew the No. 3 seed after finishing in a three-way tie for second. They will play Meadowdale, the third seed in the South.

Meanwhile, Lakewood routed Burlington-Edison 44-6 to earn the No. 2 seed in the 2A Northwest Sky Division. It earned a bye this week as a result.

M-P v. Arlington

Sophomore fullback Dylan Carson rushed for 128 yards on 21 carries, while senior tailback Jordan Justice carried 20 times for 103 yards and a score. Jay Gray added 97 yards on 9 carries.

M-P recovered the fumbled opening kickoff and although they missed that field goal they scored TDs on their next six possessions.

Arlington went for it on fourth down, giving M-P a short field. M-P capitalized when Carson scored on a 5-yard run, followed by a 2-yard QB sneak by Jake Elwood after M-P blocked a punt.

Chase Petersen got wide open on a bomb by Trent Nobach, leading to a 78-yard score. But Carson scored from 6 yards and – after Arlington fumbled away another kickoff – Jordan ran it in on a sweep right from 9 out to make it 28-7 at intermission.

Carson scored again to start the second half on a 12-yard run.

Nobach hit Joseph Schmidt for a 2-yard score in the third quarter for the Eagles. He hit on 13-of-21 passes for 160 yards.

Justice ended the scoring with a 9-yard pass from Elwood, who was 5-for-5 throwing the ball.

Even though Nobach is the top-rated local QB, Cole Cramer started the game for the Eagles, returning from an injury. But he was reinjured and taken out early in the contest.

Jaden Roskelley led the Eagle rushers with 59 yards on 13 carries. Seven different Eagles caught passes.

The Chargers demolished Shorewood 41-12 behind Cheron Smith’s 109 yards on 16 carries and 2 TDs.

The Chargers ran for a total of 269 yards, with scoring runs of 10, 11 and 6 yards, along with Smith’s runs of 5 and 4 yards and QB Caleb Blonk’s run of 1 yard. Blonk was 3-for-4 passing for 37 yards.

Lakewood

Senior quarterback Jared Taylor ran for 127 yards on 16 carries for 3 scores and also passed for a TD.

Alan Sepulveda connected on a 38-yard field goal, and Taylor scored from 3 yards to make it 10-0.

After B-E scored its only points on a 92-yard kickoff return, Taylor scored from 2 yards to make it 19-6 at halftime.

Malik Dotson’s 55-yard scamper, followed by Andrew Molloy’s 31-yard pass from Taylor and a 4-yard run by Taylor increased the lead.

Taylor’s younger brother, Justice, filled in and scored from 6 yards in the last period.

The older Taylor was 5-for-11 passing for 61 yards while Justice was 2-for-3 for 20 yards. Landen Pruitt had 14 carries for 67 yards and 3 receptions for 22 more.
