MARYSVILLE — Anthony Allen, a junior at Arlington High School, began playing golf for the school when he was a freshman but it was long before then that he got his first taste of the sport.

“I’ve been playing golf since I was 6,” said Allen. “I used to live in Florida and my dad took me out golfing once and I loved it.”

Now, a decade later, Allen is fulfilling his golf goals as one of the best high school golfers in the state. Allen is No. 1 in his division, Wesco 4A North, for points and No. 2 in all of Wesco 4A.

“This season has gone really well,” Allen said. “I’m second for points in all Wesco and I’m hoping to make it to first.”

Allen took third place in the 31st Annual Bill Egbers Memorial Tournament on May 4, shooting 145 over 36 holes — just two strokes short of tying for first place, a feat that made him extremely proud.

“That was a great accomplishment for me,” said Allen of the tournament.

He also placed eighth at the 11th Annual Tom Dolan Invitational at the Everett Golf and Country Club on April 9. Twenty-four schools were present during that event, which was played on an 18-hole, par-72 course, and included more than 120 players. He finished just one stroke above-par.

The AHS golf team is second in their division and third in the league.

“We are doing really well,” said AHS Head Golf Coach Greg Dailer. “Anthony and Jack (Lindley) are currently No. 1 and No. 2 in the Wesco North.”

Allen continued his streak of success by tying for second place at the Wesco 4A Championships, where Arlington High School competed against 10 other teams on the 18-hole, par-70 Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville on May 8.

Allen was practicing and preparing for the course beforehand, but didn’t seem nervous to compete in the event, which boasted a total of 66 players. “I’m just going to be focusing on playing well and I hope to shoot another under-par round,” he said.

Now, Allen is focused on keeping up a solid game on the green.

“Right now I’m working on my short game a lot,” said Allen. “That’s really when you get low, so I’m really working on my putting and chipping.”

Allen said he’s looking forward to the state tournament this year.

“I’m excited to go to state,” said Allen. “I think I’m going to do really well.”

Arlington finished fifth at the Wesco 4A championship tournament, with Allen and Lindley both making it onto the first team. The Eagles were set to compete in the District 1 tournaments on May 14 and May 15 at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.
