ARLINGTON — It’s hard enough being a varsity coach for one sport.

Lady Eagles basketball coach Nathan Davis decided to hang up his whistle last week in order to spend more time with his family.

“I think now is the time,” he said. “My kids are starting to get to the age now where they are playing sports and I’d like to see them play.”

This season — his 13th as head coach ­— Davis led the Eagles to a 10-10 record and finished two spots away from the district tournament. He is leaving the next Arlington coach with a tremendous amount of talent to work with, as the team was seen as one of the youngest in the conference.

Davis said he plans to retain his responsibilities as girls soccer head coach in the fall, but just decided that basketball has become too much.

“What you kind of learn is that basketball never stops,” he said. “Even with football or baseball, you aren’t out there practicing in the winter, but basketball is playing all year and it just made more sense.”

Davis said his proudest moments are seeing 14 of his players go on to play college hoops, and watching his players grow.

His most memorable moments stem from the postseason, when he was the assistant coach of the 2001 team that went to state, and when he led the 2007 team to a few wins in the district tournament.

“We barely scraped through to get into that and nobody thought we were going to do much, but they won three or four games and it was just a great time,” he said.

Davis also left the door open to possibly return to basketball later on in his life when his kids reach high school age, but for now, he’ll stick with soccer.

“Soccer is the sport that I played in high school and in college,” he said. “I’m still going to coach soccer and I look forward to seeing what our girls can do next year.”
