ARLINGTON — The Arlington Open Golf Tournament was as advertised.

The upstart tournament at Gleneagle Golf Course Aug. 7 met expectations — and goals set by it’s planners in the city’s office.

“We reached our goal,” said David Kuhl, city of Arlington Community Development Director.

The goal was to raise $5,000 toward the fabrication and installation of a gateway sign that would welcome visitors to Arlington at the junction of I-5 and Highway 530. The sign is slated to cost $10,000.

Seventy golfers competed in the scramble-style tournament with winners arranged by foursomes starting with the ladies competition, which was won by Marilyn Oevtle, Carrie Kneeland, Jean Olson, and Laura Kuhl.

The men’s competition was won by Rob Nichols, Steve Nichols, Ric Nichols and Gordon Nichols while the mixed section’s winner was Linda Byrnes, Denny Byrnes, Maureen Stanton and Bob Stanton.

All three winning foursomes were awarded a glass art piece by local artist Kurt McVay, while the 30 local sponsors gave away prizes from automobile details to flowers.

“We had a great time and a lot of community support,” Kuhl said.

Of the original $5,000 raised from the tournament, $1,000 will be donated to local charity Kids Closet, which provides underprivileged children with school clothes and other supplies.

Along with a $5,000 gift from tournament co-host, the Arlington Arts Council, the city is just $1,000 away from raising enough funds for the sign.

Kuhl said plans to raise that final amount are underway and the money might come from the Community Pride budget.

As far as the tournament goes, Kuhl thanked Gleneagle Golf Course for providing the facilities for the event.

“The service there was great,” he said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better place to host. The weather was great, despite a little rain and Gleneagle helped us with everything we needed.”
