ARLINGTON — Club Shock’s eighth-graders are the Veterans Day Tournament champions.

The Shock were out to avenge last year’s championship loss to Lake Stevens on a lost-second shot. This year they went 5-0 in the Nov. 11, 12 and 13 Veterans Day tournament and beat Moses Lake on Claire Dobler’s buzzer-beating put-back.

Head coach Rob Balderas found the tournament by scanning for Eastern Washington tournaments on the Amateur Athletic Union website.Adiya Jones led Club Shock’s scorers with an average of 8.4 points per game. Rebounding and defense put Club Shock made the difference in the five-game schedule.

“We didn’t keep rebounding stats, but our bigs dominated the inside throughout the entire tourney,” Balderas said. “They were like banshees flying around. They learned to play physically.”

Most of the girls on the squad had played together since fifth grade.”

They were very exciting to have played together,” said Sevi’s mother, Julie Bielser. “They had some new girls and to go and win the tournament is exciting.”

Club Shock sends Kylie Lopez, Jones and Dobler to Arlington High School in the fall. Serafina Balderas, Sarah Shortt, Selena Gutierrez, Rielle Jones, Jesse Madison, Alyssa Craiin and Sevi Bielser will choose either Marysville-Pilchuck or Marysville Getchell.

“The community will have some good things at Arlington and Marysville as they reap the rewards of the Club Shock team,” Balderas said.
