BELLINGHAM — With a comfortable lead heading into the 18th hole, junior Craig Crawford wasn’t aiming for the hole as he chipped onto the green from 20 yards out.

“I was just trying to hit it close,” Crawford said afterward. “I wasn’t trying to get it in. It just came up perfect.”

The golf ball fell just where it needed to so that Crawford birdied on the last hole, winning his second individual state championship with an even par performance at Lake Padden Golf Course.

The Highland Christian golfer also won a state championship in 2006 as a freshman.

On a soggy, rainy first day of the 1B/2B state tournament May 20, Crawford emerged from the first round of the par 72 Lake Padden course with a three-stroke lead, two strokes over par. He widened his lead in a second go-round at the Bellingham-area course, finishing two under on a dryer, sunnier afternoon May 21.

“The sky’s the limit for this kid,” said Highland coach Adam Borseth, whose state golfers earned some hardware at the tournament with a fourth-place team showing. “He could compete with any kid — 4A, 3A, 2A. He’s got the tools to play with anybody.”

Two seniors placed at the state tournament’s second day as well. After a 13-over performance on the first day, senior Jon Enge improved 10 strokes on the second day to come up with a fifth-place finish in his last high school tournament, while teammate Alex Witt took 20th place.

Enge and Witt intend to continue their golfing careers next year as freshmen at rival Division II schools. Enge will play for Biola College in Los Angeles and Witt will play for Point Loma Nazereze University in San Diego.
