ARLINGTON — The Eagles took second place at the Wesco 4A Championships, for both boys and girls track and field teams, at home on Friday, May 10, and snatched up the Wesco North Championship title in the process.

The Lady Eagles took second to Jackson with a team score of 166, and the boys took also took second to Jackson with a team score of 127.

“That was an awesome meet,” said coach Mike Shierk. “It was really cool to have it at home. We faced some tough competition in Jackson, but those kids battled and we are really proud of their competitive spirit.”

It is the fourth year in a row that the Lady Eagles took the division title.

“On the boys side we wanted to beat Lake Stevens. They are a tough school and a strong rival, and we got them,” said Shierk.

Star performances include those by senior Diamond Martin, who took first place overall in the 100-meters with a  time of 12.47 and fourth place in the 200-meters. Martin also won the 4×200 relay, with McKenzie Corpron, Marie Gaudin and Jessica Ludwig making up the rest of the relay team. The same girls also took fourth place in the 4×100 relay. Gaudin, along with CJ Taylor, Darby Winterer and Emma Janousek, took fourth place in the 4×400 relay. Janousek took third place in the 3,200-meter and sixth place in the 1,600-meter race. Ludwig took first place in the long jump with a 16-11.75, and first place in the triple jump with a 36-01.25. She also took fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles. Winterer took seventh in the 400-meter race and Taylor took seventh in the 800-meters.

Lynsey Leatherman swept the girls throwing competition, taking first in shot put, discus and javelin — with throws of 41-03.5, 125-09, and 130-05, respectively. Senior Dan Boyden took first place in the boys shot put with a throw of 58-05.50 and first place in the discus with a throw of 172-02.

Senior AJ Passalacqua took first place in the javelin with a toss of 168-09.

“We swept the throws. I have never seen that happen before — I mean never. We won the shot put, discus and javelin for both the boys and the girls. That was a huge deal. It’s historic,” said Shierk.

The boys team also had a number of top racing performances, including junior Jared Alskog, who took first place in the 300-meter hurdles and second place in the 110-meter hurdles, with times of 38.78 and 15.24 respectively. Alskog also took second place in the high jump with a 6-02.00.  Senior Jameson Wren took second place in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:23.44. Junior Max gray took fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.99.

Senior Skylor Elgarico also had a successful meet, taking third place in the 100-meter finals with a time of 11.28. He also took fourth place in the 200-meter race with a time of 22.99.

The boys 4×100 relay team of Anthony Dill, Gray, Albert Abes and Elgarico took fifth place in the finals with a time of 44.19.

Arlington will compete in the 4A Bi-District Championships at Lake Stevens High School on May 15 and May 17.

“I believe we are going to go into this meet to win it,” said Shierk. “The bigger the meet, the better we do.”
