EVERETT — After a thrilling meeting the year before resulted in an Arlington win, the Jackson football team avenged their loss, humbling the Eagles in their home den.

The Timberwolves, ranked in multiple top 10 lists around the state, defeated Arlington 56-21 in the Sept. 18 non-conference game at Everett Memorial Stadium.

“We would have to play a really good game to beat them, but we didn’t come close to doing that,” said Arlington coach Greg Dailer. “I told the guys we should be embarrassed as a group. I’m not embarrassed of them, but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

For one thing, the Arlington offense that produced 112 points through the first two weeks struggled to complete a pass throughout the first quarter.

About seven minutes into the game, Arlington got its first first down of the game and then promptly turned the ball over on the next snap. Jackson proceeded to score on a seven-yard carry to go up 14-0.

After Jackson scored again to take a 20-0 lead with two minutes left in the quarter, the Arlington defense showed glimmers of promise. The boys went three and out on offense, but the Eagles sacked quarterback Andy Gay for a 12-yard loss.

As time expired, Gay threw a missed lateral to one of his backs. Linebacker Vince Kurtzenacker eventually came up with the fumbled ball, setting up an eight-yard TD reception by sophomore Blake McPherson early in the second quarter. The Timberwolves went on to score two more touchdowns before halftime. Arlington quarterback Andy Smith cut into the 35-7 lead with a 39-yard touchdown reception by senior Connor Varnell, but the damage was done.

Although Arlington would go on to make a few offensive and defensive plays, Jackson outscored the Eagles in the second half. Down 49-14 in the fourth quarter, both teams put in back-ups, where McPherson — now in at quarterback — gave the Eagles their final score when he found sophomore receiver Max Bryson for a 30-yard touchdown with two and a half minutes to play.
