LAKEWOOD — Thousands of runners raced for the best times during the District 1 2A/3A/4A Cross Country Championships, which took place at Lakewood High School on Saturday, Oct. 27, and local athletes took some of the top spots.
Lakewood’s varsity girls team took fifth place in the 5,000 meter race, while their varsity boys team took sixth in the 2A class. Arlington’s varsity girls team took 8th, while their varsity boys team finished 14th in the 4A class.
Lakewood’s Ariel Jensen took 14th place with a time of 19:56.4. Darby Throndsen and Rachel Sowards took the 26th and 27th places with times of 20:32.2 and 20:35.5 respectively.
Alisa Smith finished the race at 21:32.7 minutes, taking 38th place, while freshman Lilly Whitehead took 39th with a time of 21:33.6. Sara Newman finished in 48th place with a time of 22:22.8 and Celine Espinoza finished 52nd with a time of 22:40.4.
On Lakewood’s boys team, Douglas Davis finished the race in 13th place with a final time of 16:38.2, while Drew Cabales finished at 16:53.2, taking 17th place. Alex Cooper took the 31st spot with a time of 17:23.2 and Ryan Whitehead finished 42nd with a time of 17:42.8. Preston Davis took the 44th spot with a time of 17:45, and Brandon Shepard finished 48th with a time of 17:49.0.
Arlington’s girls performances were impressive as well, as freshman Emma Janousek finished 10th overall with a time of 19:07.7 and sophomore Cassidy Rude finished in 15th place with a time of 19:10.1.
Gracie Castandeda finished in 39th place with a final time of 20:06 and Rosalie Boyle took 78th place with a time of 21:07.2. Karissa Swain took 81st place with a time of 21:12, Rachael Fleming finished 87th place with a time of 21:22.6 and CJ Taylor took 97th place with a time of 21:48.8.
Arlington’s varsity boys team racers included Jameson Wren, who finished in 31st place with a time of 16:42.1 and Austin Henderson whose 16:57.9 time took him to 55th place. Coleman Cummings finished 94th with a time of 17:52.6, Peiter Andrew took 104th with a time of 18:14.7 and Michael Barene took 106th place with a time of 18:22.7. Ivan Baez-Nolasco finished 108th with a time of 18:24.1 and Nicholas Taylor took 116th place with a time of 19:03.8.
Arlington and Lakewood runners qualifying for the state championships will travel to Sun Willows Golf Course at 2535 N. 20th Ave. in Pasco on Saturday, Nov. 3.
