MUKILTEO — Looking like the aggressor for the majority of the match, it seemed only a matter of minutes before the Eagles would provide the decisive goal.
Instead it was Kamiak that scored late in the Western Conference match to defeat Arlington, 1-0, April 6.
“I thought we played very well,” said Arlington manager Mike Gudgeon. “We were a little off early on, but we moved on from that.”
The Eagles played disconnected for the first 30 minutes with teammates getting in the way of longer runs, making for a choppy attack.
“Our shape was off by about five yards,” said Gudgeon. “And when that happens, we have extra guys in the places we wanted to get the ball through and it can get clogged.”
When the Eagles finally settled down, however, they managed to control the flow of the game, although oddly enough, it didn’t result in many scoring opportunities. Arlington only had three shots on goal in the match.
“We’re a team that usually puts three in the back of the net, so that is very different for us to only get that many shots,” said Gudgeon.
The Knights also only had five shots in the match, with most of the action coming between the two 30-yard lines.
Arlington did have two scoring opportunities late in the first half, but shots flew just too wide and high to convert.
Kamiak scored the deciding goal in the 72nd minute on a lapse in concentration by Arlington, as the Eagles back line let Zach Faller have an uncontested shot from inside the penalty area.
Although Gudgeon wasn’t pleased with the outcome, he did come away with a positive outlook on a pair of sophomores.
“We just brought Daniel Hansen up from JV and he’s a guy that’s going to be a player to watch in the future,” said Gudgeon of the forward. “He’s got some good moves.”
He also complimented midfielder Brendan Aune for controlling the pace for the Eagles (3-4), which play host to Jackson (7-0) April 18.
