M-P girls golf closes in on Everett in league

CAMANO ISLAND — Three girls golf teams walked onto Camaloch Golf Course for nine holes May 7.

And when they walked off the course, they all had something to celebrate.

The Everett girls won the league meeting, holding off Marysville-Pilchuck by four points at host Stanwood’s course.

“We were within four points of Everett,” said M-P coach Jaci Legore Hodgins, of her team’s closest-yet finish to the league’s toughest team. She added that her girls have closed the gap on the Seagulls in each of their previous meetings, including the Suncadia Invite late last month, which was a rare stroke-play tournament during the regular season.

That four-point margin came despite Everett’s top three golfers outscoring M-P’s leader, Stasia Ashley. Strong performances from the Tomahawks’ next four golfers nearly erased the total of 80 Stableford points those golfers produced as senior Brielle Saunders just trailed Ashley’s 24 points with 23. Sara Rott had 22 points, Abby Beauchamp had 21 and Taylor Ashton had 19.

The Tomahawks got one more shot at the presumptive league champions when they hosted the divisional meet May 12 after the Globe and Times went to press.

We are very excited for divisionals at Cedarcrest on Tuesday,” Legore Hodgins said. “They will play 18 holes and the entire North Wesco will be there. The top 35 in the North to go to districts.”

Stanwood’s No. 1 golfer Jackie Afualo had one of her best games ever to take medalist honors with 28 points.
