MARYSVILLE — Despite a tough streak of one-run losses, despite injuries to more than one player on arms, legs and heads, even with multiple junior varsity players in starting positions, playing each game in search of a win, the Tomahawk softball team did what no one else in the league had been able to do.

They defeated the previously undefeated Stanwood softball team, keeping their mission for a district play-in game alive.

Stanwood scored first, both of their runs coming in the fifth inning of the May 14 game. Pitcher Brittany Jeans tripled, batting in teammate Jordan Nemo, and ran in for the second run on a sacrifice play at first. Defensively for Stanwood, it wasn’t one of Jeans’ virtuoso performances. In the seven innings of regulation, Jeans walked nine and both scoring runners got on base by walk.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Megan Bombach walked, advancing to second where first baseman Morgan Martinis batted her in on a single. Likewise, infielder Jessica Christianson walked in the bottom of the seventh, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sacha Clow and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Tanigawa. The senior outfielder was tagged out at third base in a controversial call that ended the Tommies’ best chance to wrap up the win in regulation.

Instead, the teams went three more innings without scoring, forcing the international rule in the 11th that put a runner on second base at the beginning of the inning. M-P held Stanwood’s runner at second for three straight outs. Bombach, the last batter in the 10th inning, started on second in the 11th. Second baseman Jen Rosie’s bunt got Bombach to third and herself safely to first, resulting in loaded bases when Jeans walked Martinis.

Jeans struck out the next two, bringing up Clow, who battled her way into a full-count, two-out situation with bases loaded.

Jeans’ pitch went high, and Clow held her bat, resulting in a walk-off walk for the 3-2 victory.

“After going 11 innings wit Stanwood last time, it’s thrilling to have the win,” said M-P coach K.T. Allyn. “I’m proud of my girls, Sacha especially. To hold off on the high pitch, that’s discipline at its finest.”

The girls needed a win over Cascade or a Monroe loss to Stanwood the next day to secure the play-in game. Both the Tomahawks and Bearcats won, resulting in a tiebreaker game. The Tomahawks won 3-2 at Monroe, securing a play-in game at Wesco South No. 4 Kamiak May 18 after the Globe and Times went to press. The winner will play in the district tournament at Monroe’s Sky River Park.
