EVERETT – Lauren Lewis does not hit many home runs. In fact, she hasn’t hit any – in high school anyway.

But the little lead-off hitter for Marysville-Pilchuck High School picked a good time to smack her first one.

She ripped one over the centerfield fence Wednesday in the Tommies first game of the 3A District 1 Tournament.

M-P went on to demolish Lynnwood 20-2 in five innings.

With a score like that, Lewis obviously wasn’t the only hitting star. But she did knock in five runs also.

Teammate McKenzie Justice is used to hitting home runs. She hit two in the game and also had 5 RBI.

Like Justice, Chloe Morgan also went 3-4. She had 4 RBI, scored three times and had a double.

M-P advances to a semifinal game against Meadowdale Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to state.

2A

Lakewood’s girls softball team looked dominating in its first game of the 2A District 1 Tournament.

The Cougars stomped Blaine 11-1 in just six innings Tuesday. Unfortunately, the success didn’t last.

The Cougars lost to Lynden 11-4 Wednesday, and then to Granite Falls 6-2 that same day to be eliminated from the playoffs.

Against Blaine, Lakewood pounded out 16 hits to win going away. Prestyn Lalone went 2-3 with a home run and a triple. Kassidy Millar also went 2-3, knocking in three runs with a triple and a double. And Jelly Perry went a perfect 4-4 at the plate.

Millar was the winning pitcher, improving her record to 16-4.

3A Baseball

SHORELINE — Arlington didn’t expect such an easy game, but it will take it.

The Eagles, 20-4, had already clinched a state playoff berth, but were playing Snohomish for third place at districts.

Arlington pounded out a 13-3 win in six innings.

Six Snohomish pitchers helped Arlington by walking 14 Eagles.

Gavin Rork walked four times from his leadoff spot. And when he did get the chance to hit the ball, he smacked an inside-the-park home run. Owen Bishop also hit a homer, along with a double, and knocked in three runs. They both scored twice.

Another plus going into the state tournament, Arlington was able to use three pitchers to keep their pitch counts down.

Jake Russell pitched the first two innings, AJ Croom went three for the win and Bishop finished.

“Russell and Croom haven’t gotten a lot of usage this year because we’ve been so good around them, so we wanted to get them some work today,” Arlington Coach Scott Striegel said. “They both attacked the zone and forced Snohomish to put balls in play, and then our defense made the plays.”

Arlington will play at 10 a.m. Saturday in Mount Vernon. Tristan Sheward will start that loser-out game, with Bishop ready for a possible afternoon contest.

3A Track

Two Arlington Eagles qualified for state in the first day of the 3A District 1 Track Championships at Shoreline Stadium Wednesday.

Cooper Cummings finishes second in the high jump at 5 feet, 11 inches. And teammate Gabriel Green threw the shot put 46 feet, 3.5 inches to place fourth.

Arlington as a team was third with 24.5 points. Marysville-Pilchuck tallied two points. For the girls M-P had three points and Arlington 1.

The meeting continues Friday.

Meanwhile, boys on Arlington’s track team won three events as the Eagles won the Wesco 3A North Championships Friday in Oak Harbor.

Wyatt Hawthorne placed first in the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet and 3 inches. Green placed first in the javelin, heaving the spear 173 feet.

And Campbell Hudson took the 300 hurdles in 41.2 seconds.

Arlington took the team title with 183 points. Marysville Getchell was sixth with 46 points. Its only winner was Gregory Panther in the 400 meters with a time of 1:57.88.

Marysville-Pilchuck was last with 26 points.

For the girls, Arlington led the local teams, placing third with 124.5 points. MG was fourth with 78.5 and M-P fifth with 74.

Sidney Trinidad led the way with a win in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.3 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.79. She also was on the winning 4 by 100 meters relay team, with a time of 49.74 seconds. Also on that team were Juliette Williams, Reagan Beaton and Mary Catherine Meno.

The only other Eagle winner was in the shot put, Julia Parra tossed it 34 feet, 10.75 inches.

Marysville Getchell’s only win came in the 4 by 200 relay, which finished in 1:47.41. Team members are Kiarra Green, Chloe Bishop, Sabrina Farrell and Madeline Grandbois.

The only winning trackster for M-P was Trina Davis in the 100 meters at 12.62 seconds.

Track’s elite will compete at state May 25-27 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

2A

Paige Shimkus of Lakewood thew the javelin 121 feet to win 2A Bi-District Championships Wednesday at Civic Stadium.

She was the only local 2A qualifier to state, even though her team scored 48 points, second only to Anacortes with 52.

The boys scored 36 points, but had no state qualifiers on the first day.

The meet continues Friday.

3A Golf

EVERETT – Three Arlington golfers and two from Marysville-Pilchuck high schools qualified for state after placing at the 3A District 1 Championship at Walter Hall Golf Course Tuesday.

Josef Koznek of Everett was the medalist, shooting a 73-71—144 over the two days.

Connor Stephens of Arlington was second with a 73-75—148. Teammates Cody Oakes, with an 82-74—156, and Caden Smith, 81-80—161, also made it to state. For M-P, the state qualifiers are CJ Goodman, 77-79—156, and Nate Venables, 80-76—156.

State will be at Columbia Point May 23-24.

The girls tournament was set to start Tuesday at Kayak Point and finish Wednesday. Those top performers will go to state May 23-24 at Canyon Lakes.

2A

Tuesday, Lakewood competed in the 2A Districts at Skagit Golf Course.

While the two medalists shot 83, Bailey Dixon of Lakewood shot 97, good enough for 15th place. Teammate Brooke Foresell shot a 100 for 17th place.

3A Tennis

ARLINGTON – One Arlington tennis player was still alive Thursday in her attempt to go to state, but a Marysville-Pilchuck doubles team was eliminated Wednesday.

Layla Garduno-Cravioto of Arlington lost her opening match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, but came back to beat Melody Barnhart of Everett 6-4, 6-2. She will continue playing today.

However, M-P’s doubles team of Destany Bogart-Jensen Corbett lost their opener 7-6 (4), 6-0. They then were eliminated, falling in the consolation round 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-3.
