MARYSVILLE — Jack Sheward struck out 10 of the 13 batters he faced to help the Stilly Valley Minors All-Star team defeat North Snohomish 11-1 in the second round of the District 1 All-Star tournament Tuesday, July 5, played at Cedar Field.

“Our pitching was so good tonight. I am really proud of these guys,” Stilly Valley coach Rick Bishop said. “We were able to handle their top hitters and we kept them off the bases. We walked a few batters but it was overall a good game for us.”

So good, in fact, that three Stilly Valley pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter. Sheward struck out the first batter he saw in the first inning and then capped off his night by striking out the final two batters. He had at least two strikeouts in each of his 3 2/3 innings-pitched.

Joey Groves struck out two batters and Owen Bishop, who pitched the final inning, struck out one.

“Jack is a great pitcher,” Rick Bishop said. “He has the ability to get ahead of the batters and then he does a great job putting them down. But it was a team effort. We had three total pitchers and they all did a tremendous job tonight.”

Stilly Valley’s offense wasted little time scoring runs. With one out, it took advantage of three consecutive hits.

Owen Bishop hit a single to right field and Sheward drove a hit over the right-fielder’s glove. Groves followed with a two-run double to score Bishop and Sheward as Stilly Valley took a 2-0 lead. Groves scored from third base two batters later when the Panthers’ catcher Taylon Lopez overthrew pitcher Trevor Fischer.

After reaching base a few minutes later on a single, Stilly Valley’s Cameron Smith, who stole second and third, scored on North Snohomish’s second error of the inning.

“We hit the ball well all the way through the lineup,” Rick Bishop said. “We got some breaks with their errors but we did a great job at the plate.”

Groves and Smith led Stilly Valley combining for six hits and four RBIs.

Glen Hester helped Stilly Valley add to its lead in the third inning. After hits by Smith and Gerit Beberry, Hester drove them home to give Stilly Valley a 6-0 lead. The Panthers scored their lone run in the fifth inning. Stilly Valley tacked on three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning. Stilly Valley, which randomly drew a first-round bye, advanced to the third round and played Mill Creek.
