MARYSVILLE — With the all-stars around the corner, the Stilly Valley Royals ended their season at the Strawberry Tournament.
A 10-1 loss to the Marysville White Sox in majors action June 11 halted a two-win run by the Royals at the tournament.
“We played really well in the first couple games, but we ran into a good Marysville team,” said Royals manager Bob Bergley. “Sometimes that just happens.”
The Royals opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Alderwood VFW on June 5 and then won their second contest against the Gators of Stanwood and Camano Island, 6-2. Unfortunately, wider margins of victory by other teams in Pool F left the Royals needing to play the White Sox in a pig-tail game to enter bracket play.
The White Sox jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the Royals in the first two innings and never looked back.
Highlights of the season for Bergley were Avery Earnhardt, who hit the team’s only home run of the season and watching first-year player Jeremiah Alonzo improve dramatically from the start of the season.
“We had a great defensive team this year,” Bergley said. “We didn’t have a team score 10 runs on us all season — this is the first time it’s happened.”
The Royals finished their season 14-10 and in fourth place in their league.
Team members included: Zane Blanken, Avery Earnheart, Jordan Nielsen, Mason Bergley, Blake Hathaway, Jacy Leavitt, Jerrimiah Alonso, Andrew Roundy, Jacob Olson, Jeff Hoskinson, Jake Star.
Coaches were Bergley, Dale Blanken and Jim Leavitt.
