STANWOOD — The Eagles tennis team continues to impress as they sent a pair of doubles teams to the district tournament.
“It’s big for us,” said Arlington coach Sean Cunningham. “It’s an honor to make districts and, at the 4A level, we don’t traditionally push people into districts.”
The team of Marty Thordarson and Austin Taylor has an easier route in the tournament, as they don’t have a play-in match on their calendar. Eagles Ari Fernando and Josiah Aylesworth, on the other hand, made a comeback to defeat Andrew Carlson and Scott Jerde of Lake Stevens (6-7, 6-2, 7-5) in a loser-out match.
“Just getting there is half the battle,” Cunningham said. “I believe that our guys still have their best tennis in them and now is the time to get on a hot streak.”
The duo of Fernando-Aylesworth played Monday against the No. 5 seed of Wesco North — Kamiak’s Brian Yang and Joe Hertzog on Oct 26. If they won, they play Oct. 28 at Stanwood.
