ARLINGTON — “Watch out, they’re good,” cautioned Old Bats and Odd Balls players about the team on the other bench.

Universal Aerospace — the other team — brought their trademark defensive precision and solid batting order to the table, winning 20-2 over Old Bats and Odd Balls in an Aug. 12 afternoon game at Twin Rivers Park.

A first-inning spree by Universal Aerospace gave the team of 11 all the runs they needed, as they repeatedly exploited the grasses of left field. Robert Phenis hit a three-run triple to put Universal up 4-0 and Jason Pettit had a grand slam in his second at bat of the inning.

Playing more informally, Old Bats and Odd Balls scored one run in the first inning, as a walk of Kirk Roberts sent in Brian Berg, who got on base with a hit.

Universal Aerospace had another grand slam in the second inning, Jason Tauscheck batting in three runners and himself to build the Aerospace lead to 16-1. The Old Bats defense improved with each outing, including a stop at third base by shortstop Grant Massey and baseman Julie Bresler. Still, by the end of five innings, all but two members of Universal Aerospace scored at least one run for the team.

Defense was something Aerospace did well, going after lead runners, which included particularly solid coverage by their own third baseman, Andrea Pettit.

In the third inning, John Mackey lead off with a triple, scoring his team’s second run on Heather Cook’s RBI.

“We’re just a bunch of husbands and wives,” said Old Bats player Laura Souther of the team playing in the city of Arlington’s summer league for their second year. “Last year, we took turns at everyone’s house afterward, but now we go around to local businesses instead, the bowling alley and La Hacienda.”
