ARLINGTON — The hits just weren’t there for the Arlington 76ers.

After two weeks of wet weather postponed the Legion Baseball calendar, Arlington finally saw a game June 12 as they hosted Burlington in a 7-2 loss.

The Red Sox led from the get go, as their leadoff hitter found home in a two-run first inning. Arlington fought back, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to center field by Kekoa Riggen.

But Burlington put distance between themselves and Arlington, scoring a third run in the top of the second and increasing their lead to five in the fourth inning. The weak spot in the Burlington defense was on the mound, as the Red Sox pitching staff reliably walked Arlington players, but the Sixers were unable to take advantage of big opportunities. A third-inning triple by Riggen got no further, and a bases-loaded situation in the fourth gained the Sixers just one run as Arlington stole home on a pass ball.

Down 7-2 in the sixth inning, Arlington had its best chance to rally. Once again Burlington had loaded the bases for Arlington, but the pitcher buckled down, striking out one Sixer and causing another to fly out. Riggen came up again and battled in the box, but the long ball he’d been hitting all game ended in the glove of the Burlington right fielder.

“The time off was rough on hitters,” said Arlington coach Scott Striegel after the game. “We had opportunities, but unfortunately we weren’t able to take care of it. Their pitcher got us to pop balls up or hit them right at guys.”

A trio of Sixers handled pitching duties, with Chris Wendland starting, Danny Huleatt coming in for two and a half innings, and frequent catcher Thane Street closing out the game.

With the weather delays, the Arlington team — composed heavily of the large junior class that played on this spring’s high school squad — is only about a quarter of the way into its summer schedule. In addition, they look forward to a couple of tournaments this summer.
